Advanced Control Research Ltd (ACR) was formed in November 1998 to conduct research and development into areas of intelligent and innovative control systems.

With the help of grants from the Department of Trade and Industry (SMART Awards), a loan from the National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts (NESTA) and a grant from the Technology Strategy Board (TSB), ACR has developed advanced microcontrollers for upper limb prostheses, a portable early diagnostic system for an imminent heart attack and with the support of The Royal Marines Charity an orthotic system for spinal cord injuries.
